Deutschland

After a long journey from India to the States for Higher Education; like most of the others and most importantly, more than half a decade of Professional Experience — I have decided to move to Germany (you read that right!)

Personally, even I had the same initial thought that everyone does, “Is that a right decision?” Well, you might not earn as much as you would in the States— but there are “other aspects” which are going to make a difference. I made the decision leaning towards what was right for my career and there would be no regrets, off-course!

Since I was firm on my decision, now I had 2 options to make it happen:

  1. Job Seeker Visa
  2. Through a Job Opportunity

Learn more about them in Making it in Germany.

Why the U.S. Fell Short

Living in the U.S., there’s no denying the abundance of opportunities. However, the fast-paced, profit-driven culture often comes at a personal cost. The glorification of the hustle mentality leads to burnout, and the lack of work-life balance leaves little room for true happiness or self-reflection.

Moreover, the societal structure in the U.S. can feel deeply unequal. Basic necessities like healthcare and education are prohibitively expensive for many. It’s disheartening to see how much of your life revolves around simply trying to stay afloat; often replacing genuine connection and well-being with material pursuits.

Why Europe, and Germany in Particular, Is Better

Germany, and much of Europe, offers a starkly different way of life. Here, the focus is on quality rather than quantity. Work-life balance isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a lived reality. With shorter working hours, generous vacation policies, and societal respect for personal time, life feels more fulfilling.

Healthcare is a human right, not a privilege. Knowing that your medical needs will be met without the fear of financial ruin is an enormous relief. Similarly, education is viewed as an investment in the future, and it’s largely free or affordable for everyone.

Cities are designed for people, not cars, with extensive public transport systems, walkable streets, and green spaces. There’s a tangible sense of togetherness and cultural appreciation.

A Sustainable Future

The EU’s focus on sustainability and environmental consciousness is another factor that makes life here superior. Renewable energy, waste reduction, and eco-friendly urban planning aren’t just ideals; they’re actionable policies shaping daily life.

Contrast this with the U.S., where environmental concerns often take a backseat to economic growth.

Conclusion

Moving to Germany was more than just a change in location; it was an escape from the pressures of a culture that values productivity over well-being.

In Europe, I’ve found a society that prioritizes people and the planet. It’s a reminder that life is meant to be lived, not just endured.
